A WONDERFUL first week of school! (Through 9/12/14)
Thank you to students, families, caregivers and community members! This is a fabulous start to the new school year.
We have heard many positive comments from you regarding our response to student safety concerns and the closure of the back parking lot. We thank you for supporting this change to keep our students safer! ECFE opens September 15th. At that time you may notice the back lot open to ECFE parents during Elementary Pick-up times. Please remember that the back lot is for ECFE parking only. ECFE parents will need to display the ECFE parking card to park in the back lot. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
We are happy to see students using the crosswalks and are especially grateful to everyone for your support. The positive reactions we have heard as we have asked for cooperation and help with modeling the use of crosswalks really help us to enforce the use of the crosswalks with students.
We have noticed a number of students arriving before 7:45am, sometimes as early as 7:15. Student safety is one of our biggest concerns. We just want to give a gentle reminder that we have neither supervision nor crossing guards before 7:45am.
Thank you, again, to everyone for your support and for making this a great first week of school! We look forward to the entire school year!

Mr. Lorsung's 5th grade class wrapped up their Health chapter on 'Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs' unit with a Public Service Announcement relating to the chapter. Students had to write their 1 minute public announcement sharing important factual information concerning their topic. They were then video recorded using green screen technology. After recording, then their segment was edited with the background that they created. Fantastic information along with awesome technology! The kids were very proud!!

Celebrating 100 Days of School!
On Friday, February 14th, the kindergarten students celebrated 100 days of school doing a lot of 100 themed activites. Here are some of them: They counted to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's. They took a guess as to where 100 steps would take them and count out 100 steps in the hallway. They read 100 sounds, 100 words, and saw how many times they could write their name in 100 seconds. They jumped for 100 seconds, greeted each other, and sat quietly for 100 seconds. One class created a class book where each student wrote about "I could eat 100 _______." Stamped 100 items on a sheet in groups of 10, hunted for numbers in the room and colored numbers on 100 chart, and made "Zero the Hero" number hero out of tin foil and a paper cape with 100 on it. They took the numbers 1, 0, 0 and turned them into something such as key, glasses, trucks, etc., made a special 100 snack - sugar wafer stick and 2 small donuts. and read 100 themed story books. And, in one class counting by 10's to 100 students earned a hundred dollar bill with their picture on it. Wow....a lot of fun happened on the 100th day of school. We are sure the students went home tired from this fun day and dreamed about being 100 days smarter.

Holiday Volleyball Tournaments
During the month of December, students in grades 4-6 play on volleyball teams within their own grade level. All teams create and choose their own names. Twenty teams are formed within each of these grades. For the next 5 weeks, the teams compete against each other to earn their way to the Holiday Volleyball Tournament the day before their winter break. Teams’ records are kept during this period to determine qualified teams. With only 8 teams making the playoffs per grade level, it is quite an honor to even make the tournament. The students that do not make the tournament come to the gym to cheer on their classmates creating a fun and exciting tournament atmosphere for all.

Students in Miss Gillman's class learn about the 3 Rs:
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Miss Gillman's first grade class celebrated Earth Day on April 22nd. They learned about how to take better care of our Earth by using the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. This inspired a recycling project. The project was very open ended. The only requirement was that their creation must be made of recycled materials. The students came up with great ideas and many parents lent a hand with the building. It's amazing what a little imagination and some old "junk" can turn in to!!
And......the lucky winners are..........
With excitement, Pine City students have been awaiting the drawing for a football signed by the MN Vikings Harrison Smith and a hat signed by St. Louis Blues hockey player Jamie Langenberger. As part of our Dragon Zone positive behavior and support program, students displaying behaviors that were respectful, responsible, cooperative, and safe earned Dragon Zone positive slips. Positive slips earned throughout the month of April went into this drawing.
After digging through 6313 positive Dragon Zone slips, Mr. Arola pulled the slips of Ethan Doenz and Ella Erickson.
Congratulations to these two lucky winners.

On Thursday, February 28th, 2nd grade students performed 'Dino Days'. This music program compliments the 2nd Grade science classroom dinosaurs unit. During the dinosaurs unit, students learn about herbivores, carnivores, different types of dinosaurs, prehistoric time periods, extinction and fossils. Students also investigate about a specific dinosaur they are interested in.

Students learn that the paleontologist's job is not an easy one and requires a great deal of patience and care. Students use a toothpick for their "tool" and a chocolate chip cookie as their "fossil". The objective of this activity is to use their tool to extract the bones (chocolate chips) from the fossil.

25 years of Holiday Volleyball Tournament
Twenty-five years ago, Mr. Weiss, Elementary Phy-ed Teacher, developed a physical education unit that is probably one of the most remembered by current and former students. Not only did Mr. Weiss want students to improve their volleyball skills, he also wanted students to learn and portray good sportsmanship skills along with working together as a team to reach a common goal.
6th Grade Pie Social
Sixth grade students have been hosting their Annual Pie Social for around 15 years. Students donated pies to be sold to other students and staff. Sixth grade students take charge of this annual event. They dish the pie, and collect all the money too plus handle the cleanup. Students generally can buy a slice of pie for $1 and adults $2. Students and staff have been very generous over the years. All money collected has gone to the Pine City Food Shelf. This year sixth grade reached an all time new record with over $1,554 in donations!
